Overexposure to the sun causes damage to the top layer of the skin called the epidermis, as the sun's ultraviolet rays destroy collagen. which is a collection of amino acids glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. Collagen protects the skin by preventing absorption and spreading of bacteria or toxins. The production of collagen slows down with age. Aging also causes the skin to become thinner, which makes it easier to damage.

Oranges contain vitamin C, which is needed to make collagen. Vitamin C reverses the harmful effects of UV damage by eliminating toxins and stabilizing the structure of collagen. Vitamin C can also be used to treat hyperpigmentation, and when taken in conjunction with vitamin E, vitamin C is four times as potent. Other foods high in vitamin C are citrus fruits such as lemons and limes.
